Northwest Farm Spotlight: Johnson Foods
In 1950, Truman was president, rock and roll was sweeping the nation and Edgar Johnson and his wife were toiling away, raising five kids and working to get their family’s asparagus packing business off the ground in rural Sunnyside, Washington, northeast of Portland. It was hard work, but their dedication and perseverance grew into something that has lasted three generations. Today, Edgar’s grandson Gary runs the business but still remembers his early years cutting asparagus before school and his college summer breaks, working alongside his dad, learning the ropes of their packing business. It’s a good feeling knowing that the food they produce reaches the plates of other hard-working families in the Northwest, Gary says. One of the things Johnson Foods prides itself on is the ability to cut, process and ship their produce to stores like Market of Choice within two days of harvest. “It’s fresh when it arrives – as if you cut it yourself,” he says. From farm to plate, and from Gary’s family to yours, Johnson Foods asparagus is as fresh as it comes.
